Cupid Cloud Hop: Sweetheart Couple Book Spotlight (Giveaway)

The Cupid Cloud Hop is hosted by Winter Haven Books!!

This week we were asked to spotlight a book that includes our favorite book boyfriend or sweetheart couple and share what we love about these characters.

I chose one of my favorite sweetheart couple, Jace & Clary from Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments.

The Mortal Instruments on Goodreads
City of Lost Souls on Goodreads

In the beginning, Jace and Clary (but mostly Jace) agonized over the possibility that they were brother and sister, and even when that was proven false, they still had obstacles that seemed impossible to overcome. But they have overcome every obstacle in their path so far, and have come away stronger because of them. These two are a passionate couple that only have eyes for each other. And I'm hoping that by the end of the series, that these two will finally be able to focus solely on themselves and each other. There is just something about this couple that you can't help but love.

Some Jace & Clary Moments:

City of Bones

“And next time you're planning to injure yourself to get my attention, just remember that a little sweet talk works wonders.”

City of Ashes

“You can close your eyes and think of England, if you like."

"I've never even been to England," she said, but she shut her eyelids. She could feel the dank heaviness of her clothes, cold and itchy against her skin, and the cloying sweet air of the cave, colder yet, and the weight of Jace's hands on her shoulders, the only things that were warm. And then he kissed her.

She felt the brush of his lips, light at first, and her own opened automatically beneath the pressure. Almost against her will she felt herself go fluid and pliant, stretching upward to twine her arms around his neck the way that a sunflower twists toward light. His arms slid around her, his hands knotting in her hair, and the kiss stopped being gentle and became fierce, all in a single moment like tinder flaring into a blaze.

City of Glass

Clary shut her eyes. You didn't say no to an angel, no matter what it had in mind. Her heart pounding, she sat floating in the darkness behind her eyelids, resolutely trying not to think of Jace. But his face appeared against the blank screen of her closed eyelids anyway - not smiling at her but looking sidelong, and she could see the scar at his temple, the uneven curl at the corner of his mouth, and the silver line on his throat where Simon had bitten him - all the marks and flaws and imperfections that made up the person she loved most in the world. Jace. A bright light lit her vision to scarlet, and she fell back against the sand, wondering if she was going to pass out - or maybe she was dying - but she didn't want to die, not now that she could see Jace's face so clearly in front of her. She could almost hear his voice, too, saying her name, the way he'd whispered it at Renwick's, over and over again. Clary. Clary. Clary.

"Clary," Jace said. "Open your eyes.”

City of Fallen Angels

“You promise."

"I swear on the angel. The hell with that. I swear on us."

"Why us?"

"Because there isn't anything I believe in more.”

City of Lost Souls

“Anyway that other thing we almost did in Paris-that's probably off the table for a while. Unless you want that whole baby-I'm-on-fire-when-we kiss thing to become freakishly literal.”

Illustration from THE SHADOWHUNTER’S CODEX

Cassandra Clare shared this illustration from The Shadowhunter's Codex:

"The frontespiece illustration for the Shadowhunter’s Codex, by Rebecca Guay, featuring the TMi characters. This thing is actually a huge oil painting in real life. This book is going to be so pretty! (Wait till you see Charles Vess’ illustration of the Infernal Devices characters…)"

THE SHADOWHUNTER'S CODEX, a guide to the world of the Nephilim, is due out November 2013!

New CLOCKWORK PRINCESS Snippet

In this newest CLOCKWORK PRINCESS snippet, Will and Tessa go to Magnus for help in saving Jem.

“You do not want to help us,” Will said to Magnus. “You do not want to position yourself as an enemy of Mortmain’s.”

“Well, can you blame him?” Woolsey rose in a whirl of yellow silk.

“What could you possibly have to offer that would make the risk worth it to him?”

“I will give you anything,” said Tessa in a low voice that Will felt in his bones. “Anything at all, if you can help us help Jem.”

Magnus gripped a handful of his black hair. “God, the two of you. I can make inquiries. Track down some of the more unusual shipping routes. Old Molly —”

“I’ve been to her,” Will said. “Something’s frightened her so badly she won’t even crawl out of her grave.”

Woolsey snorted. “And that doesn’t tell you anything, little Shadowhunter? Is it really worth all this, just to stretch your friend’s life out another few months, another year? He will die anyway. And the sooner he dies, the sooner you can have his fiancée, the one you’re in love with.” He cut his amused gaze toward Tessa. “Really you ought to be counting down the days till he expires with great eagerness.”

New CLOCKWORK PRINCESS Snippet

Jem always said that Will rushed toward the end of a mission rather than proceeding in a measured manner, and that one must look at the next step on the path ahead, rather than the destination in the distance, or one would never reach one’s goal. Will closed his eyes for a moment. He knew that Jem was right, but it was hard to remember, when the goal that he sought was the girl that he loved.

New CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE Snippet

The snippet features Jace and Jordan and the topic of war.

“No killing,” Jordan said. “We’re trying to make you feel peaceful, so you don’t go up in flames. Blood, killing, war, those are all non-peaceful things. Isn’t there anything else you like? Rainforests? Chirping birds?”

“Weapons,” said Jace. “I like weapons.”

“I’m starting to think we have a problematic issue of personal philosophy here.”

Jace leaned forward, his palms flat on the ground. “I’m a warrior,” he said. “I was brought up as a warrior. I didn’t have toys, I had weapons. I slept with a wooden sword until I was five. My first books were medieval demonologies with illuminated pages. The first songs I learned were chants to banish demons. I know what brings me peace, and it isn’t sandy beaches or chirping birds in rainforests. I want a weapon in my hand and a strategy to win.”

Jordan looked at him levelly. “So you’re saying that what brings you peace … is war.”

“Now you get it.”

Countdown to City of Lost Souls {1 Day Snippet}

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

Here is the latest snippet, with accompanying artwork by Street-Angel, under the cut:

So this was what her brother looked like. Really looked like. A pale face, all angles and planes, tall and slim in black gear. His hair was silvery-white, not dark as it had been when she had first seen him, dyed to match the color of the real Sebastian Verlac’s. His own pale color suited him better. His eyes were black and snapping with life and energy.

Standing beside him, his golden hair shimmering in the pale sunlight, was Jace. But not the Jace Clary had imagined so often over the past two weeks …

Countdown to City of Lost Souls {2 Days Snippet}

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

Simon rolled his eyes. “It’s a good thing we know the person who’s dating Magnus Bane,” he said. “Otherwise, I get the feeling we’d all just lie around all the time wondering what the hell to do next. Or trying to raise the money to hire him by selling lemonade or something.”

Alec looked merely irritated by this comment. “The only way you could raise enough money to hire Magnus by selling lemonade is if you put meth in it.”

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

“It was many years ago, when Magnus and I were lovers. We were in bed together, after quite a passionate evening.” Camille saw Alec flinch, and grinned. “You know how it is with pillow talk. One reveals one’s weaknesses.”

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

She heard him as he approached and turned around, her pale face going even paler as he sat down beside her. “Simon,” she said, on an exhale of breath. “I wasn’t sure you’d come …”

“Hi, Rebecca,” he said.

Countdown to City of Lost Souls {6 Days Snippet}

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

Dim light spilled through the windows, and a faint red glow from the smoke alarm over the closet. Clary was lying on her side, under a heap of blankets, and her back was deliciously warm. An arm was draped along her side. For a moment, in the half-conscious dizzy space between waking and sleeping, she wondered if Simon had crawled in the window while she slept, and laid down beside her, the way they used to sleep in the same bed together when they were children.

But Simon had no body heat…

Countdown to City of Lost Souls {7 Days Snippet}

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

Sebastian looked at Jocelyn, his black eyes quiet and narrow. “If you were really a real mother,” he said, “a good mother, you would have known I was alive. There was a man once who said that mothers carry the key of our souls with them all our lives. But you threw mine away.”

Countdown to City of Lost Souls {8 Days Snippet}

In the final countdown to the release of ‘City of Lost Souls,’ Cassandra Clare has promised to share a snippet every day leading up to the May 8th release.

Alec followed the line of Magnus’ gesture and saw a small silver box perched on the opposite side of the big wooden table. He reached over and picked it up. It was like a miniature metal chest set on small feet, with a curved top and the initials WS picked out in diamonds across the top.

W, he thought. Will?
