Summary: As Maggie Mitchell enters her final semester of college, the last thing she wants is a guy in her life, let alone two of them.

Her new lab partner, Sawyer Reed, is still the overconfident and sexy jock that made fun of her in high school. The only thing that has changed is that he now uses a wheelchair, the result of a skiing accident.

Jude Marino is a hot actor who all the girls want and would do anything to get. He works at a local theater where Maggie has been assigned to complete community services hours after rear-ending a police car.

Both Sawyer and Jude want Maggie but only one of them will be able to capture her heart.

Review:

Maggie Mitchell has an unexpected reunion with an old high school crush when she enters the lab for her undergraduate studies. But Sawyer Reed is a lot different than he was in high school. He is now in a wheelchair after a skiing accident paralyzed him. Maggie and Sawyer begin to reconnect, when she rear ends a police car and is sentenced to community service at The Little Theater, where she meets Jude Marino. Will Maggie be able to see past Sawyer's wheelchair or will be be blinded by Jude's bad boy good looks?

Although they were complete opposites in high school, Maggie and Sawyer are more alike now that they are in college. They both love science and don't want to do anything else career-wise in their lives. They just seem to connect on all levels. Jude, on the other hand, is one of those intense and brooding artistic types. He loves the theater and acting and plans to go to California when the time is right. Jude and Maggie seem to only connect on a physical level. Sawyer and Jude used to be best friends until Sawyer's accident. They were always competitive with each other, but now that Sawyer is in a wheelchair, Jude doesn't see him as an equal anymore. So now the contest is on for Maggie's affections.

I felt that Community Service had a pretty powerful message at its core. The physically disabled are not any less of a person because of their condition. In a lot of cases it makes them more than they were before. The romance was very sweet (and I'm not saying who Maggie chose), and I was very happy with how the book ended. I'd even say that everyone won in some way at the end. It may not have been what they originally wanted, but it was what they needed.

I could feel myself starting to fall asleep in my book when there was a knock on the door. I looked at my watch. It was nearly nine o’clock.

The knocking continued until I opened the door and Eddie waltzed in.

“Hey, neighbor,” he said. “Sorry, I’m late.”

“It’s nine at night,” I moaned. “What are you doing here?”

He flopped on the couch. “Just wanted to see what you were up to.”

“I’m getting ready to go to bed,” I said and immediately regretted it.

Eddie raised an eyebrow. “Is that an invitation? I didn’t think you were that easy.”

I put my hands on my hips. “That was not an invitation.”

“Too bad. As much as I dig that sexy little tee shirt you’ve got on, I’d love to see it off.”

I could feel my face turning red and the heat spreading throughout my body. How could a man simultaneously disgust and excite me?

“If you sit down and talk to me for five minutes, I promise I’ll leave.”

“Fine,” I said as I sat down on the other side of the couch. I stared at Eddie and waited for him to speak.

“So, do you know much about kite surfing?” he asked.

I shook my head.

“Do you want to see how it’s done?”

“Not particularly,” I said.

I caught a glimmer of something in Eddie’s eyes. A challenge, perhaps?

“How about a walk on the beach then?”

“It’s awfully dark out,” I quipped.

He grinned. “I meant this weekend. Maybe Saturday at dusk. We can watch the sunset. It’s romantic.” He emphasized the word romantic as if he was making fun of it.

“I already have plans for Saturday,” I said matter-of-factly.

Eddie’s cool demeanor slipped for an instant but was back just as quickly. “You work fast,” he said.

“You’ve haven’t even lived here a week yet. I thought it would take at least few weeks for all the sharks to come out of the water.”

“I certainly wouldn’t call my date a shark,” I said.

Eddie rolled his eyes. “All guys are sharks. Some are just better at hiding it.”

“Whatever. You don’t even know the guy.”

“But I am a guy and I know how guys are.”

I glared at Eddie. “No, you know how you are. Not all guys are like you.”

Eddie shrugged. “Believe what you want. At least I’m honest about what I want.”

“And what is that exactly?” I challenged.

Eddie slid over to me so our bodies were almost touching. He looked at me with such desire I could barely breathe. “You and I both know what I want, and I think you want it, too.”

I nearly leapt from the couch to stop myself from doing something really stupid. All it would have taken was for me to move one inch toward Eddie and we would have been making out on my couch and probably in my bed shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, when I jumped from the couch, my knees were weak and I nearly fell over. When I righted myself, I turned to Eddie and glared at him. “You have no idea what I want.”

Eddie got up from the couch and stood right next to me. He got close enough to whisper in my ear. Feeling his breath on my neck sent a wave of shivers down my body that were so intense, I nearly collapsed. The sexual tension between the two of us filled the small room.

“You think you know me, Alexandria,” he said softly in my ear. “But you don’t. One of the things you don’t know about me is that I love playing games. I thrive on it. It’s an aphrodisiac. And this game you’re playing with me is the ultimate turn on.”

And with that, he strolled out the door.

Shit. I didn’t know what to do. Part of me wanted to roll right into bed with Eddie. It would be so easy. The sex would probably be mind-blowing. And the aftermath would most likely be messy. Especially when I had to live next door to the guy for at least a year, which was the duration of my lease.

Then there was Daniel. He was definitely the type of guy who wanted a relationship. But was I ready for that? Was I ready to fall in love again?

I moved to Florida to get away from the complexities and drama of a romantic relationship gone terribly wrong. Yet, here I was in Florida not even a week, and I found myself in the midst of not one but two possible romantic entanglements. What was wrong with me?

A Girl, a Guy, a Tournament and a Challenge

The Girl: At a time when most girls obsess about homecoming and high school prom, Rainy Dey spent her senior year caring for her dying mother. So when her father drops her off at college to start her freshman year, his words of advice to his bookish daughter are to start acting like a young person and finally have some fun.

The Guy: College senior, Aaron Donavan, aka Mr. Hot-and-Knows-It, is President of the Clubhouse, a social club for the college’s most wealthy and popular guys. Aaron can have any girl on campus except the one who challenges and excites him the most—Rainy Dey.

The Tournament: Every year, the senior members of The Clubhouse engage in a golf-inspired tournament to see who can sleep with the most freshman girls. When Rainy finds out about the tournament, she believes Aaron’s only interest in her is to score points by taking her V-Card.

The Challenge: Can Aaron convince Rainy that his feelings for her are true and that she won’t be just another notch on his tournament scorecard?

EXCERPT:

After class on Thursday, Aaron was waiting outside the building for me. He was wearing a sly grin on his face.

“What’s up?” I said as I approached him.

“Let’s get to the library. I’m stoked about picking an artist for our final project.”

I furrowed a brow only half believing his claim. “You’re actually getting excited about the project?”

“Come on,” he said and headed toward the library. I shrugged and followed.

“So what about Andy Warhol,” Aaron said as he held up a small reproduction of a Warhol self-portrait.

“He’s definitely got the wow factor. It’s cool that he was a visual artist but was also into making films and music.”

“I like Andy Warhol but there’s already an Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania,” I said. “Who else did you come up with?”

“Georgia O’Keefe. How can you not like a woman, who paints flowers that look like vaginas?”

I stifled a laugh. “Vagina flowers? Really? That’s what you got from looking at her work?”

He nodded. “Who wouldn’t?”

I quickly scanned through our text book until I got to a photo of one of her ram’s head paintings. I held it up. “You think this one looks like a vagina?”

Aaron considered the work. “Well, maybe not that one. But there are plenty of others.”

“As much as I like the idea of honoring a female artist and as much as I like her work, there’s already a Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico.”

Aaron crossed his arms over his chest. “Well, I’ve come up with two ideas. I’d like to hear some ideas from you.”

I gulped. I wasn’t sure if he’d like my idea, or if he’d even know much about her, but she was one of my favorite artists. Before I could even speak, Aaron held up a finger.

“Wait. Let me guess who you’re going to select.”

I narrowed my eyes and stared at him. He wasn’t the only one, who enjoyed a challenge. “Is this a bet?”

He grinned. “I like the sound of that.”

I didn’t think there was any way he would be able to guess my first choice artist. She certainly wasn’t as familiar as Georgia O’Keeffe or as famous as Andy Warhol. “What do I win if you don’t guess correctly?” I said.

“But I will,” he said confidently. “And when I win the bet, I want you to go out to dinner with me tonight.”

I gulped. I didn’t think there was any way he could win but what if he did? The thought of going out with him scared the hell out of me. “Okay,” I said finally. “And if I win, I want you to tell me about The Tournament.”

Now he was the one who gulped. A look of panic crossed his face and just as quickly he covered it up with his Mr. Calm and Collected façade. “What Tournament?’ he said.

I gave one sharp laugh. “Oh, please. Don’t play dumb. I know about the game you guys in The Clubhouse are playing.”

His face turned serious. He leaned in close to me and whispered through clenched teeth. “I’m not sure what you think you know but I’m sure you’re wrong.”

I rolled my eyes. “So you’re not trying to get into my pants so you can score points. I hear virgins are worth a lot these days.” As soon as the words came out of my mouth, I immediately regretted saying them.

Aaron looked into my eyes with such intensity, I thought I could burn up in the heat of his gaze. I swallowed hard because I knew I was in trouble.

“I would never do something like that to you—ever.”

I looked into his eyes with what I hoped was equal intensity. “But you would do it to other girls?”

His nonresponse to my question seemed to be the answer.

I slammed my book shut. “I think we’ve done enough on the project for today.”

When I rose to leave, Aaron hopped right up with me. “I don’t.”

“You don’t what?” I challenged.

“I don’t think we’ve done enough for today.”

I sighed. “What do you want from me, Aaron?”

“Mary Cassatt,” he said.

My breath caught. “What?”

“The artist you selected is Mary Cassatt.”

He met my gaze with pure desire in his eyes. Shivers ran through my entire body. “How did you know that?” I barely managed to squeak out.

“Because I know you,” he said simply.

I shook my head. It didn’t make any sense. How could he have possibly known? How could he know me that well in just a few short weeks? The idea that there was some deeper connection between us chilled me to the core. I slumped back down into my chair. Aaron sat back down, too, but he didn’t take his eyes off of me.

“I knew as soon as I saw her paintings,” he said. “The girls she paints, especially the ones in the big hats. They look just like you.”

“They do not,” I protested.

“True story.”

He continued to stare at me. “I think you look most like Ellen Mary Cassatt with a Large Bow in her Hair.”

I could no longer contain a grin. “You seem to have done quite a bit of research on Mary Cassatt’s work.”

“And you seem to have lost a bet,” he said and grinned.

I still wasn’t sure what to make of Aaron. I didn’t like the answers he gave me about The Tournament but he seemed to be so sincere about his feelings towards me. How could he be both a womanizing asshole, and a guy, who seemed to truly care about me at the same time?
