Mini Tour: Sacrifice of Passion by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez (Guest Post+Giveaway)

I'd like to thank Bewitching Book Tours and Entangled Publishing for giving me the opportunity to participate in the DEAD SEXY IMPRINT mini tour. I'd like to welcome Melissa Bourbon Ramirez, author of SACRIFICE OF PASSION, to A Bibliophile's Thoughts on Books. There is also a GIVEAWAY at the end of the post for an E-COPY of Sacrifice of Passion!

I’ve always been fascinated by legends, and I have a natural-born love of the Mexican culture.  My husband is Mexican-American, we try hard to instill the Mexican culture into our kids’ lives.  When I starting writing, I wanted to bring in elements from this culture I so love being a part of (I like to say I’m Latina-by-marriage).  I started with the Lola Cruz mystery series.  Lola’s a Latina and who I imagine my daughter might be in a lot of ways.  She’s Latina, but American, and I love her!  No legends in the Lola series.  But when I decided to try my hand at a romantic suspense, I went dark.  DARK.

Enter chupacabra.

An urban legend.  A mythical blood-sucking goat-like creature. And the perfect backdrop for a romantic suspense novel.  They’re creepy, and I was intrigued with the idea of building a story around this legend.

So, what is a chupacabra? A blood-sucking goat-like creature.  And the villain in Sacrifice of Passion.

Truth be told, I wasn’t 100% sure I could write a really great romantic suspense, but the legends drew me in and wouldn’t get out of my head and so I had to try.  It was surprisingly fun to write, I found out (the second book, Curse of Passion, revolving around the legend of la Llorona, comes out in early 2013).  Writing a stand alone book is different than writing a series.  With my Lola Cruz Mysteries (and my Magical Dressmaking Mysteries), everything’s about creating sustainability with the characters and their world.  There’s never complete resolution with the main characters because their stories keep going.

With a stand alone romance, the happily ever after is a must and so the story has to be wrapped up, which means you go in fast and dig deep.  And boy is that an experience.  Getting into Vic and Delaney’s heads, delving into their backstories, making them real, living, breathing people was challenging at times, but so rewarding, and in the end, I absolutely love them.  Anjana Vasa, a blogger, wrote in a review of Sacrifice of Passion: “Delaney and Vic are quite honestly, two of the most real characters I've ever come across, they're both imperfect and yet you can see what makes them special. I couldn't help but admire Delaney's strength through the entire novel, sure she has her weak and scared moments but she shows that you can make your way back from anything.”

To hear readers say you hit the mark with the characters in a book is the entire reason writers write.  It’s a thrill!  Add to that the fact that Joyce, here at HEA, read and offered a quote for the book, and writing Sacrifice of Passion has become one of the best book writing experiences I’ve had.

All I can say is that Mexican legends seem to be working for me, and for this book if the reviews are any indication.  I guess I did okay with romantic suspense!

Vic Vargas and Delaney West’s story is epic. Intriguing.  Evocative.

I hope you love it as much as I do!

Tell me:
Have you heard of the legend of chupacabra, and do you think legends like this make good backdrops for romantic suspense novels?

Check out these awesome reviews of Sacrifice of Passion by super bloggers Anjana Vasa (http://www.kindleandme.com/2012/06/sacrifice-of-passion-by-misa-ramirez.html ) and Kayleigh from K-Books (http://k-booksxo.blogspot.com/2012/06/review-sacrifice-of-passion.html).  I’m still flying high because of the reviews!

About Sacrifice of Passion

Texas rancher, Vic Vargas, finds himself facing more than his stubbornly silent son when the chupacabra, a supposedly mythical blood‐sucking beast, starts killing his livestock—and stalking Delaney West, the town’s newly returned veterinary assistant, the sensual woman who ran from the altar and broke his heart twelve years earlier.

Reluctantly, he seeks her help to get to the bottom of the disturbing animal mutilations, only to have her break through to his sullen son...and rekindle the love he’d thought was lost forever. But her refusal to share a terrible secret sends her running straight into the lair of the chupacabra, plunging her back into her worst nightmare, and forcing them both to confront the wrongs of the past—in order to stay alive for the future they desperately want.

Parading around the sidelines of Sacramento’s professional basketball scene in a barely-there cheerleading outfit is one thing—but parading around in nothing but smile? If she has any chance of hiding this from her traditional family and on-again/off-again boyfriend Jack, she’s going to have a lot more than her duct tape bra and killer dance moves to keep under wraps….

Cover Reveal: My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris (Giveaway)

I'd like to thank YA Bound for giving me the chance to participate in the cover reveal for Rachel Harris's My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century!

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Never-Before-Seen Excerpt from MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY:

“I thought I’d teach you a dance from where I come from,” I tell him. “One that’s much easier than that multi-step mess inside.”
I place my left hand on Lorenzo’s shoulder and slip my right one into his. I pause to listen to the music floating over the tinkling voices and bubbling fountain, and begin counting the three-beat tempo. “One, two, three. One, two, three.”
I stand still, only my head moving, slowly nodding with my words so he can hear the rhythm.
When his head begins subtly bobbing with mine, I show him how to add his feet. He takes a tentative step forward with his left while I step back with my right, then we side step, close, and repeat the steps with our other feet, all while I lightly whisper the beat count.
The breeze picks up, blowing my skirt and skimming my veil across the back of my neck. Chills run down my spine, but the warmth coursing through my veins from being in his arms provides a delicious contradiction.
Lorenzo continues nervously darting his eyes to our feet, but he is dancing. As he relaxes into the movement, his shoulders rising and falling with the steps, the confidence he always seems to exude creeps back on his face, and he tightens the hold around me. Our faces are kissably close, our lips a hairs breadth away from touching. I stare into the chocolate depths of his eyes and the rest of the ball fades away. The only music guiding our steps is my light whisper and the erratic rhythm of our breathing. Time slows. Lorenzo grins.
“I think you got it,” I say breathlessly, running my hand along the soft fabric of his shoulder, feeling the rock-hard muscles underneath.
My body curls inward, pressing against his. The proper form for the waltz is a straight spine and shoulders back, but if there was ever a time to break the rules, this is it.

About this Author:
As a teen, I threw raging parties that shook my parents’ walls and created embarrassing fodder for future YA novels.

As an adult, I read and write obsessively, rehash said embarrassing fodder, and dream up characters who become my imaginary friends.

When I'm not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, you can find me homeschooling my two beautiful princesses, hanging out with my amazing husband, or taking a hot bubble bath…next to a pile of chocolate.

MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY is my first novel. I did have my own fantabulous Sweet Sixteen in high school. Sadly, it wasn’t televised.

Cover Ogle (#11): South of Surrender by Laura Kaye

Expected publication: December 11th 2012 by Entangled Publisher

Here's the summary:
She’s the only one who can see through his golden boy façade to the broken god within…

Chrysander Notos, Supreme God of the South Wind and Summer, is on a mission: save Eurus from his death sentence and prove his troubled brother can be redeemed. But Eurus fights back, triggering vicious summer storms that threaten the mortal realm, dangerously drain Chrys, and earn the ire of the Olympic gods who ordered Eurus dead.

Laney Summerlyn refuses to give up her grandfather’s horse farm, despite her deteriorating vision. More than ever, she needs the organized routine of her life at Summerlyn Stables, until a ferocious storm brings an impossible—and beautiful—creature crashing down from the heavens.

Injured while fighting Eurus, Chrys finds himself at the mercy of a mortal woman whose compassion and acceptance he can’t resist. As they surrender to the passion flaring between them, immortal enemies close in, forcing Chrys to choose between his brother and the only woman who’s ever loved the real him.

This cover is really awesome! The lightning and fire in the background hint at danger, the black horse symbolizes power, and then there's the hot guy on the cover. There's more color to this cover than the covers to the previous book in the Hearts of Anemoi series. I think this is my favorite so far.

Cover Ogle (#7): Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt

Expected publication: April 2012 by Entangled Publishing

Here is the blurb:
What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?

Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?
I'm totally gushing over this cover! It's soo pretty! The story sounds amazing, too. I love the tagline on the cover "Love can't be engineered." I'm really looking forward to this new dystopian in the new year.

Cover Ogle (#2): Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies...
Expected publication: May 2012 by Entangled Publishing
The first book in the Lux series, Obsidian, is released tomorrow, December 6. I've heard great things about this series and I can't wait to start reading it.
But this post is about the cover for the second book, Onyx, so I'm going to move along... I have to say that I like this cover better than the one for the first book. I love the blue coloring in the background and Katy's dress. It makes Daemon's eyes stand out more than on Obsidian's green cover. And Katy and Daemon's pose is just really cute.
What do you think of this cover? Let me know in the comments!
