About this Author:

Since as far back as I can remember, I’ve been a writer. As a child, I wrote stories featuring my favorite characters at the time: horses. I created plays and nagged my neighborhood friends into acting, while I produced and directed, and presented them to our parents. I constantly kept a journal, a way to document my life’s events, and also try to make sense of the world around me. As a student at Blackburn College, I majored in English, and accepted my first job as an assistant editor at a small magazine publishing company.

Somewhere along the way, though, life got in the way. The salary that the magazine paid me to do the work I loved was minimal. Insulting, even. I needed to finance the basics of life – a home, a car, food. So I left the magazine, and embarked on a very different kind of career with a large insurance company. I got lots of opportunities — I paid health insurance claims, I taught the computer to insurance agents, I supervised customer service representatives in the billing department. I love my career and all the complex challenges I encounter there. During the course of my duties, I wrote memos and evaluations, but nothing that satisfied that creative urge within me to express myself.

When my life was at its busiest, juggling the responsibilities of marriage, homeownership, motherhood, and a full time career, I decided to resurrect my dream. I began writing – only in dribs and drabs, because that’s all I had time for. I looked forward to running up to my “office” (actually, my guest bedroom) every day, so I could spend my allotted one hour (the most I could convince my kids to leave me to myself) and write. The result was my first published book: Whispers of the Heart.

I was absolutely thrilled when Publishamerica, the first publisher I sent the manuscript to, loved it and wanted to publish it. Since then, I’ve been hooked. Since I began Whispers in 1998, I’ve consistently had a project underway. I now have six books published, and three more completed manuscripts which I’m shopping around, hoping to find a publisher who believes in them as much as I do. Along the way, I’ve won a couple awards, done many booksignings and appearances and met a lot of great people, both readers and writers.

Life is still busy. I’m currently a manager in the Information Technology field. My day job is a fast-paced, stress-filled environment. My husband and I are the proud parents of two sons. Seventeen and twenty, my oldest is in college and my younger is in high school. Although parenting changes the older they get, it’s still the most rewarding part of my life helping my boys grow and mature into their own lives.

Cover Reveal: Grab Your Pole Series by Jenn Cooksey

SHARK BAIT by Jenn Cooksey
Grab Your Pole #1
Young Adult Contemporary
Published:6/15/12

Previously homeschooled Camie Ramsey is being shoved into the shark-infested waters of public high school, where even helium filled, penguin bespeckled arm floaties likely won’t help keep her inexperienced, fifteen-year old head above water in that rip current of hormones and emotions.

Camie’s worldly wisdom might be severely lacking (i.e., the closest she’s come to being kissed was sitting too close to the TV whilst Jake Ryan leaned in to give Samantha that fateful 16th birthday kiss), but she does understand her only hope for survival is if she’s thrown some kind of "social" life preserver before she sinks like a freaking rock. However, what will her fate be when she endeavors to flag down the only lifeguard on duty, the enormously popular and ridiculously beautiful Tristan Daniels? The most sought after and virtually most unattainable guy in school who not only makes Camie’s heart flatline on a recurring basis, he’s also the one guy who seemingly doesn’t know she exists.

Feeling like an inept piece of chum that could ultimately be swallowed by Jaws, can Camie get Tristan to rescue her from floundering in the treacherous deep, or is she destined to be Shark Bait?

Author’s Note: While the tales themselves are fictional, some of the events and characters are very loosely based in reality and on my experiencesâ€"but don’t worry, the names of the characters, most of their unfortunate fashion sense and/or questionable taste in music has been changed to protect the not-so innocent.

Book Spotlight/Giveaway: The Ghosts of Nagasaki by Daniel Clausen

Today I'd like to introduce you to Daniel Clausen, the author of The Ghosts of Nagasaki. The Ghosts of Nagasaki is an novel he wrote loosely based off of his experiences in one of Japan's most historical Prefectures. Mr. Clausen would like me to point out to you that The Ghosts of Nagasaki is a literary novel with some magic realism elements, this is in no way a supernatural romance or thriller.

Here is further information on the book and author:

About The Ghosts of Nagasaki:

One night a foreign business analyst in Tokyo sits down in his spacious high rise apartment and begins typing something. The words pour out and exhaust him. He soon realizes that the words appearing on his laptop are memories of his first days in Nagasaki four years ago.

Nagasaki was a place full of spirits, a garrulous Welsh roommate, and a lingering mystery.

Somehow he must finish the story of four years ago--a story that involves a young Japanese girl, the ghost of a dead Japanese writer, and a mysterious island. He must solve this mystery while maneuvering the hazards of middle management, a cruel Japanese samurai, and his own knowledge that if he doesn't solve this mystery soon his heart will transform into a ball of steel, crushing his soul forever. Though he wants to give up his writing, though he wants to let the past rest, within his compulsive writing lies the key to his salvation.

About Daniel Clausen:

Daniel Clausen has been writing short stories, novels, and essays since he was in elementary school. His short stories have been published in Slipstream Magazine, Spindrift, Leading Edge, and Zygote in my Coffee, among other venues. He has published two other books: The Sage and the Scarecrow (a novel) and The Lexical Funk (a short story collection/ word bonanza). The Ghosts of Nagasaki is his third book and is loosely based on his experiences living in Nagasaki, Japan.

A Short Interview with Daniel Clausen:

1.) The Ghosts of Nagasaki is loosely base on your experiences in Nagasaki. What is it about the city that gripped you and wouldn't let go?

I guess the first thing that shocked me about Nagasaki is that the people are very nice. People in Japan have a reputation for being nice, but even in Japan Nagasaki has a reputation for having nice people. It was very evident when I first got there. For this reason, it's the perfect landscape to reform someone as cynical as the novel's main character. Nagasaki is also known as a "peace city" because of its activism against nuclear weapons. Again, this makes it a perfect place to reform a die hard cynic like the main character.

The other part of Nagasaki that made it perfect for a novel is its perplexing geography. As the site of Portuguese missionaries, and as one of the few places in Japan with heavy Christian influences, Nagasaki has some very beautiful churches. Often these churches sit side-by-side with Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. And then, of course, there is the site of the nuclear bomb blast--which happened to hit right next to one of Nagasaki's biggest churches.

I should also mention that many people in Nagasaki believe in ghosts. So, there you go.

But, on a personal level, the thing that wouldn't let me go in Nagasaki was the countryside. I would love walking in the countryside.

2.) I'm going to take your suggestion and ask about the Samurai Inoue. How does he fit into your story?

Have you ever had that boss you just couldn't stand? Did that boss just happened to be a little overweight and drunk off his little bit of middle-management power? Did that boss then suddenly transmute into a character from a 1960s Japanese novel? Well, this one does. In the novel Silence, Inoue and other samurai are less like warriors and more like petty bureaucrat fat cats, slightly overweight and jolly--all while the peasants slowly starve to death.

My friend Christian Bocquee (www.christianbocquee.com) was nice enough to draw an illustration of Inoue for me (http://ghostsofnagasaki.com/2012/07/16/enter-the-bureaucrat-samurai-inoue-ghosts-of-nagasak/). I'm hoping that if the book does well enough, I can get Christian to illustrate the whole books with about two or three illustrations a chapter.

3.) And finally, what caused you to write The Ghosts of Nagasaki?

Causation is tricky. The easy answer is that the ghosts told me to do it.

Thank you so much for answering my questions!

PRESS RELEASE:

The Ghosts of Nagasaki: A Novel New Novel Explores Pain, Memory, and Spirituality in the Backdrop of Nagasaki, Japan

The numerous workdays have taken a toll on Tokyo investment banker, Pierce Williams. Each day he wakes up, and each day the weight where his heart should be grows heavier. One morning, without knowing why, he sits down at his desk and begins typing something. Soon he realizes that without meaning to he has begun typing the story of his first days in Nagasaki four years ago. As he types he begins to realize that the words on his screen are more than he could have imagined. Instead of simply remembering the past he is reliving it in ways that fundamentally alter his present. In his manic writing are the ghosts of his past, a chilling vision of his future, and the possible key to his salvation. Somehow he must solve the mystery of four years ago. A mystery that involves a young Japanese girl, the ghost of a native writer, and an oppressive bureaucrat/samurai bent on crushing his spirit.

Daniel Clausen’s fiction has been published in Slipstream Magazine, Zygote in my Coffee, Leading Edge Magazine, and Spindrift, among other venues.

Mr. Clausen’s novel is loosely based on his experiences in Nagasaki, Japan. For the author, Nagasaki is not just anyplace—it’s a rich landscape of striking contrasts. As the second city hit by the nuclear bomb during World War II, the city has a history of pain and hardship. Out of this history, however, Nagasaki has developed as a bastion of peace activism. As the first place in Japan to open to outsiders, Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, it is one of the few places in Japan where Christianity was able to take root. And yet, the persecution of Christians during the Edo period has left scars that have yet to fade.

It’s in this landscape that we find the novel’s protagonist, Pierce Williams. He arrives in Nagasaki as an English teacher haunted by the death of his foster mother. It’s only through the help of Nagasaki’s haunted landscape that he is able to discover the roots of his trauma and forge a path toward his salvation.

About this Author:

I started my obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. I would read any fiction book I could get my hands on. I knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding me from TV or music, my mom would take away my books as punishment (The Horror!). My love of all things paranormal was inspired by my good friend Laurie, who convinced me that books with vampires, witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, I gave it a shot with the Sookie Stackhouse books, realized she was right, and the rest was history.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with my degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as I do for several years. I will always be a proud member of the Steelers Nation, but I couldn’t take the cold and moved my frozen tush to Florida where I now live with my family and two cats. You will find me now with my trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!

When I'm not writing or reading, I am probably partaking in my favorite vice: sunbathing. I know it's wrong, but I love the feeling on the hot sun on my skin and could lay in it for hours. I do live in Florida for a reason!

I also enjoy traveling, baking, movies, and playing with my adorable fur babies.

by Jerel Law
Published December 11th 2012 by Thomas Nelson Publishers
What if you could actually see angels and fallen angels engaging in battle—and you were expected to join the fight?

It’s been one year since Jonah Stone and his sister, Eliza, discovered that their mother is a nephilim, the product of a union between a human and a fallen angel, which makes them and their little brother, Jeremiah, quarterlings, or one-quarter angel. After embarking on an epic journey to rescue their mother and the other nephilim, who were kidnapped by fallen angels, the Stone kids have enjoyed a little peace and quiet.

But when Jonah and Eliza are attacked by fallen angels at school, they learn that quarterlings all over the world are being targeted, and separating them from their parents is the only way to keep them safe. The kids undergo special training to help them discover their own unique angelic gifts, which come in handy when they embark on a mission to find a mysterious prophet who they believe holds the key to Abaddon's defeat in a massive battle between good and evil.

Driven from Croatia by his ancient foes, vampire Andre Maras has finally made a blood-like wine to cure his fellow refugees. Now he needs Zoey’s PR expertise to reach them. After his wife’s death, Andre has a vow of his own—never to risk another painful blood bond. And one taste of the tempting Zoey would bind him to her eternally.

His secrets stall her PR plans. Her jealousy is stoked by the blissed-out beauties leaving his bedroom. At every turn, he utterly fails to resist her. Author Bio:

Amber Belldene grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallops…when she could pull herself away from a book.  As a child, she hid her Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermons—an irony that is not lost on her when she preaches these days.

With a B.A. in comparative religion and an M.A. in theology, Amber is a Christian minister and student of religion.  She believes stories are the best way to explore human truths.  Some people think it is strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to Amber. She believes the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire.

Amber is addicted to vampire stories, but loves to read all kinds of romance and literature.  Her favorite books examine history and cultural origins, like Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent, or Salmon Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.  And, yes, she was named after that Amber, of the classic romance novel Forever Amber.

From the wine country of Sonoma County to the foggy neighborhoods of San Francisco, all of Amber’s fiction is set in Northern California, where she lives with her husband and two children.
