They say paranormal is dead.
Well, hell, folks, I don't think
so. Look at all the fabulous paranormals on the (virtual) shelves. So many great
stories, in fact, that it can be difficult for a new author to stand out.
Traditional or indie, ebook or paperback, getting your book out there is a
challenge. That's how 'dead' paranormal is. Honestly.
Luckily for me, I have this
awesome cover art from the people at Berkley Sensation. An eye-popping cover is
always a good start. And this hot, golden-winged, slightly crazy-looking angel
warrior is eye-popping, to say the least.
But I know that for me, when I'm
buying books to read -- and writers are readers too! – a cool cover isn't
enough. I don't mind familiar genre tropes – I'll read vampire books until the
end of time – but I do want a great story, fabulous characters, an awesome romance.
'Write what you love to read,'
they say. Possibly the same 'they' who say 'paranormal is dead'… but in this
case I think 'they' are right.
So I write characters with a
sense of humor. Japheth, my fallen angel hero in REDEMPTION, may not wisecrack
all the time – that'd be kind of inappropriate when he's about to get
slaughtered by demons – but even in the midst of angst and terror, he doesn’t take
himself too seriously. He puts up an ice prince façade to keep everyone at a
distance and avoid temptation, but he's self-deprecating about it. He doesn’t
expect other people to care about his problems. I like that.
I write paranormal characters
who are real people. My fallen angels have walked the earth so long, they're
almost human. They have human thoughts, feelings, desires. They have
otherworldly concerns, naturally – fighting demons, stopping the end of the
world, bickering with their cruel archangel are all in a day's work. But my
angels talk and interact like real people. They have real lives. They make love
like real men (the sexy kind, of course…!). Because that's what I prefer to
read.
I write imperfect characters. My
heroine in REDEMPTION, Rose, is tough and determined, but she's also wracked
with guilt over the bad things she's done. She's a kind person at heart, but
sometimes she's mean, because that's just human nature. She makes mistakes.
Likewise my hero, Japheth. He doesn’t always make the right decisions. He
thinks unheroic thoughts. Because that's what I like to read. A hero who's 100%
fine and upstanding doesn't interest me as much as a guy who's forever on the
edge of surrendering to darker impulses… and sometimes crosses that line.
So yeah. The Seven Signs is dark, magical, contrary,
violent, romantic. Japheth is a chaste hero who struggles with forbidden
desire, a fallen warrior who must deal with the possibility that he's too far
gone to deserve redemption. Rose is a tough heroine who believes she's damned,
and hates the world for it, but secretly longs for salvation. It's sexy, edgy,
colorful, raw with emotion.
Because that's what I love to
read. I hope you enjoy it, too! And so long as we love to read it, paranormal
will never die. No matter what 'they' say.
