Follow Friday (#35): Favorite Mom in Fiction

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Happy Mother’s Day! Who is your favorite mom from fiction?

Answer: This is a hard one! I don't pay that much attention to the parents in books, unless they've made a big impact to me and left an imprint of themselves on my memory.

So the first mothers that pop into my mind are Bella's mom Renee in the Twilight Saga, and also Edward's adoptive mother Esme. They both seem like great mothers to have.

Renee is like the wind, free and breezy, and gusting if she gets upset. Life would definitely be a whirlwind with Renee as a mother. (And I used A LOT of wind symbolism in there...weird).

And Esme is just so loving. I always just wanted to give her a hug while I was reading.

Follow Friday (#34): Most Emotional Scene You've Ever Read

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Tell us about the most emotional scene you’ve ever read in a book – and how did you react?

Answer: This one is a very personal one for me, but the most emotional scene (well it may be several scenes in this book) I've ever read would have to be from New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. I felt so connected to Bella during that book, because I had gone through something similar and felt the way she did, that it nearly broke me all over again. I wasn't expecting to feel so intertwined with Bella's feelings, and New Moon was a difficult book for me to read.

Quotes that I connected to:

“The waves of pain that had only lapped at me before now reared high up and washed over my head, pulling me under. I did not resurface.”

“Time passes. Even when it seems impossible. Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise. It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.”

“Forbidden to remember, terrified to forget; it was a hard line to walk.”

“Sometimes I’m afraid that I’m losing myself.”

“The absence of him is everywhere I look.”

“And yet, I found I could survive. I was alert, I felt the pain - the aching loss that radiated out from my chest, sending wracking waves of hurt through my limbs and head - but it was manageable. I could live through it. I didn't feel like the pain had weakened over time, rather that I'd grown strong enough to bear it.”

As you can see by the quotes, I was in like this black hole of sorrow, but New Moon help me get through it, just as much as it plunged me back in. And each time I read the book, the feelings became manageable to the point where it doesn't hurt so much to read it. So I can say with all certainty that New Moon will always be a very important book to me.

Follow Friday (#33): Guilty Pleasures in Reading

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What is your guilty pleasure as far as reading? Is it a genre, or is it a certain type of book?

Answer: I love love LOVE the "I Love You" moments or the "Declaration" moments in a book. I'm always eagerly awaiting that moment when the tension and the feelings get to be so strong that it's impossible for the characters to hold back anymore. And I'm almost always really disappointed if there isn't such a moment in a book.

Follow Friday (#32): Books You've Given to Others Lately

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

We always talk about books that WE want. Let’s turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

Answer: Sadly, being poor and having no money, I haven't been able to give any books to people. But the last book SUGGESTION I gave was the Twilight Saga for my cousin. She really enjoyed them.

And I've hosted a number of giveaways this month for books like: The Ghosts of Nagasaki, Life on the Edge, Touching Evil, Furthermore: An Anthology, Beauty from Pain, The Voice, The Boys of Summer, Koishi, Flight, Forty Days, Hell's Mercenary, Sweetest Taboo, Snow and the Seventh Wolf, and Disconnect.

NOTE: Giveaways still open: Hell's Mercenary, and Sweetest Taboo are open until Feb. 23. Touching Evil OR Furthermore, and Snow and the Seventh Wolf are open until Feb. 25. And Disconnect is open until Mar. 1. All links are in the sidebar.

Follow Friday (#31): Mardi Gras! What You'd Do To Get The Hottest Books

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Happy Mardi Gras! If they were throwing the HOTTEST books off of a Mardi Gras float — what would you do to have them throw to you…?

Answer: Well, I'm not a very flashy (pun totally intended) person, and I probably would never ever go to Mardi Gras. I don't think I'd ever do anything totally outrageous, like the way people behave during Mardi Gras. If I wanted the books bad enough, I'd just buy them or borrow them from the library.

Follow Friday (#30): First Thing You'd Do If You Woke Up In Your Favorite Book

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What is the first thing you would do if you woke up to find yourself in your favorite book? via @GizmosReviews

Answer: I read before I go to sleep, so most of the time I dream about the world of that book and the characters in it, and I'm a part of that world. But if I were to wake up and actually be in the world of that book, I'm not sure what I'd do. I suppose after the shock wore off and the excitement took over, I'd explore a bit and just take everything in.

Follow Friday (#29): Last Book That Kept You Up At Night

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Answer: Enraptured by Elisabeth Naughton - My favorite in the Eternal Guardians series so far!

Follow Friday (#28): Favorite Villain in a Book

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Who is your favorite villain from a book?

Answer: This is a toughie! It might just be easier to give a list. These are more like villians I'm supposed to hate, but can't help but like something about them.

Jagger Maxwell from the Vampire Kisses series
Cruce from the Fever series
Neferet from the House of Night series (I'm on the edge about this one)
Dimitri Belikov from the Vampire Academy series (when he was a Strigoi, although it was kind of scary and sad)
Queen Mab from the Iron Fey series
Valentine Morgenstern and Jonathan Morgenstern from the Mortal Instruments series
Preston Reilly from the Kings & Queens series
Galen from the Lords of the Underworld series (this is another I'm on the edge about)
Cameron Logan from the Death Collectors series

Follow Friday (#27): Supernatural Creature You'd Choose to Really Exist

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: If you could choose one supernatural being/creature to really exist what would it be and why? ex. fae {submitted by @SeeingNight}

Answer: I would choose shapeshifters. Sure, they can be quite dangerous, but so can any supernatural being/creature. What I like about shapeshifters is the intensity of their bonds to others. I've never been really close to anyone, so even though it's fictional, the strength of their bonds to others really fascinate me (and make me a little envious).

Follow Friday (#26): New Years Blogging and Writing Resolutions

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What New Years Blogging or Writing resolution have you placed on yourself?

Answer: My blogging resolutions is to try to get everything posted on time and not overextend myself this year. Last year, I scheduled way too many reviews, and I wasn't able to get my weekly posted done every week. I had so much to post and not enough time to do it. So I'm going to try to be more time oriented.

Follow Friday (#25): To-Die-For Book Crush

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Activity! Who is your to-die-for book crush? What do you think they look like? Add an image to make us all happy.

Answer: Tod Hudson from the Soul Screamers series. I fell in love with Tod during If I Die, and no one has taken his place in my heart yet, although Daemon Black from the Lux series came very close to stealing it.

A Favorite Tod Quote from If I Die (only one of many):

“Only two years dead, and it was getting harder for me to feel…anything. I was starting to slip into the darkness. The numbness. And the worst part is that it wasn’t even scary. I was losing myself, and I didn’t even care. Then I met you, and at first I didn’t understand what had happened. What had changed. All I knew was that I wanted to be near you. Then you helped me with Addison, even though it nearly got you killed—I nearly got you killed—and I started to understand how special you are. But by then, you were getting serious with Nash. With my brother—one of few people in the whole world I still gave a damn about. So I tried to stay away. I tried so hard.” His voice cracked on the last word, and my heart cracked with it. Tears stood in my eyes, but I was afraid to let them fall. I was afraid to even breathe for fear of missing a single word. "But you kept pulling me back. You’re the brightest thing I’ve ever seen, Kaylee. You’re this beautiful ball of fire spitting sparks out at the world, burning fiercely, holding back the dark by sheer will. And I always knew that if I reached out—if I tried to touch you—I’d get burned. Because you’re not mine. I’m not supposed to feel the fire. I’m not supposed to want it. But I do. I want you, Kaylee, like I’ve never wanted anything. Ever. I want the fire. I want the heat, and the light, and I want the burn.”

Follow Friday (#24): Movie That Would Make a Great Book

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a great book?

Answer: I don't know about a movie, but the TV show REVOLUTION would make a great dystopian novel. I love the show, but I think it would be great to read a book version of the story, too.

Follow Friday (#23): Books With Similar Ideas

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Answer: I honestly don't mind that much, as long as there is SOME originality to the story/characters, etc. If the book is EXACTLY the same as another, then it's kind of a let down.

Follow Friday (#22): Deal Breaker in a Book

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can’t deal with bad editing?

Answer: Bad editing is one; it interferes with the flow of the story. I also don't really like books that are NOT from the character's POV; it seems impersonal from the author's POV or when the author tells the story, and I have a hard time really connecting with it.

Follow Friday (#21): Genre Outside Your Usual Favorite

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?

Answer: I usually read books with supernatural elements (paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a little sci-fi), so when I want something different, a little more REAL, I like to read contemporary novels.

Some recently read contemporary novels I've read:

Cornered: 14 Stories of Bullying and Defiance
First Comes Love
Chasing McCree

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What hyped up book do you think was worth all the talk?

Answer: If I picked a book from this year so far, I would say BEFORE I WAKE by Rachel Vincent. Her books never disappoint.

Follow Friday (#19): Reading Habits Based on Mood

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

Answer: My reading habits don't really change much at all. I'm happiest when I'm reading, so if I'm depressed or anxious about something I just pick up a book and start reading. It takes my mind off of things I'd rather not think about, so reading calms my nerves, no matter what the book is.

Follow Friday (#18): Favorite Book Required to Read?

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: Summer Reading. What was your favorite book that you were REQUIRED to read when you were in school?

Answer: To be honest, when I was in school, I didn't read very much of the required reading (which caused my to almost fail the class a few times). There are two reasons for that: 1.) I was having eye problems at the time an couldn't read a lot of the print, and 2.) I can't read a book that I can't get into. Most of the required reading was books that I really wasn't interested in. It wasn't until my senior year that we started reading something that I was interested in.

I think from my senior year required reading I liked Brave New World by Aldous Huxley the best.

Follow Friday (#17): Why Did You Start Book Blogging?

Follow Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--a great way to discover new amazing blogs and new friends!

Q: What drove you to start book blogging in the first place?

Answer: I was actually looking around some book fan pages on Facebook and noticed that there were some posts from their blogs on their page. I visited a few and decided that I'd like to give it a try, too. It was touch-and-go for a while (I wasn't very happy with the first few tries, but I'm really happy with ABTB!). It's been a lot of fun since I started book blogging and I've met a lot of great people online in the book blogosphere and continue to do so now.
