Because sometimes you need to stand up for yourself.
With all the recent reports of bullying
in the K-Pop world, we thought it would be a little more uplifting to
take a look at anime and manga characters who were bullied, but overcame
their circumstances themselves or were fortunate enough to have someone
rush to their rescue.
Hinata Huyga (Naruto)
– Poor Hinata. Not only is she kidnapped as a child, but she’s teased
in school. Thankfully, she has a savior in Naruto, who attempts to save
her from her tormentors (even though he’s horribly outnumbered). This
act of bravery in turn inspires Hinata to be stronger and more brave
herself. As it turns out, a little inspiration, a little self-confidence
and some serious martial arts training goes a long way, ladies!
Yukinari Sasaki (Girls Bravo) – This poor guy was bullied so badly by the women in his life that he actually ends up developing hives
whenever he comes in contact with any woman. Eventually, he overcomes
this reaction and actually becomes friends with a few lucky ladies. It
could be worse - it's not like he turns into an animal when touched by the opposite sex or gets turned into the opposite sex when touched by water.
Lucy (Elfen Lied) –
Lucy is a special girl – she’s not human; she’s a Diclonius, a mutant
species with telekinetic powers and horns that stick out of her head.
This, of course, leads to relentless bullying. Although she finds a friend in Kouta,
Lucy doesn’t overcome this diversity in what would normally be
considered a “positive” way – she ends up resorting to violence (of the
terrifying, telekinetic variety). Don't try this at home.
Kenichi (Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple) –
Kenichi is a normal teenager, although he’s branded with a terrible
nickname and teased mercilessly (which for some is pretty normal too).
In an attempt to change his fate
as the consummate victim, Kenichi takes up martial arts and finds he’s
actually quite the fighter. Eat your heart out, Karate Kid!
Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
– Anthy is a rather sad character. Although she is often abused by
those around her, she doesn’t really ever fight back. Thankfully, like
Hinata, she has a savior in Utena who proves The Beatles' old adage true: "all you need is love."
